Forty Years on the Mountain: The Legacy of CrossRoads

In 1985, two bold women—Alma Hunt and Katherine Bullard—drove up a winding, muddy road, forded rivers, and discovered a rugged 600-acre parcel of land nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Lord had planted a mighty vision in their hearts: a mountain, a sacred space set apart for girls and women—and people of all kinds—to come and experience God, to train up the next generation, and to be equipped for Kingdom work and development.

At the time, the men who accompanied them laughed at the prospect. “How are you going to build cabins, a dining hall, a pool, and more in such a logistically challenging area?” they likely pondered and teased. Yet here we are, forty years later, celebrating our foremothers’ courage, wisdom, and faithfulness. Looking back, it’s clear—we stand on the shoulders of spiritual giants.

Over the past four decades, CrossRoads has undergone many subtle changes. Originally founded as a GA camp for girls operating between Memorial Day and Labor Day, CrossRoads now runs year-round and welcomes girls, boys, and people of all ages. Our mission, however, remains the same: to cultivate space for people to experience God.

On October 18, we gathered for a joyful homecoming—former and current staff, alumni, and friends of CrossRoads coming together to celebrate all that God has done and to dream about what God might yet do on this sacred mountain.

The day was filled with laughter and fellowship as generations of CrossRoads campers and staff shared lunch, worship, camp songs, games, and more. During the celebration, we also launched our new giving campaign, $40 for 40, as we seek to give back to the place that has given so much to us. Funds raised will go toward special projects focused on renewing and restoring the many buildings across camp.

If you would like to help ensure that CrossRoads thrives for the next forty years and beyond, please consider donating through the link below.

As we look ahead, we carry the same vision that first took root on that mountainside in 1985—a vision of faith, formation, and transformation. May CrossRoads continue to be a place where lives are changed, leaders are shaped, and God’s presence is unmistakably felt for generations to come.
