Who We Are

HerMission is a statewide movement equipping the church to join in God’s work—locally and globally. Formerly known as Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia, our roots go back to 1874 when women began organizing to support missions in Virginia and beyond.

Today, we continue that legacy by coming alongside churches of all sizes and generations, helping every person find their place in God’s mission.

Our History
April 4, 1872

Women from five churches in Richmond meet and organize the Woman’s Missionary Society of Richmond as the first cooperative organization of Baptist women from more than one church, south of the Potomac.

July 7, 1873

Charlotte Lottie Moon is appointed by the Foreign Mission Board (FMB).

September 7, 1874
September 7, 1874

Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) is born as a result of helping to raise money for the FMB to supply Lottie Moon and her sister Edmonia Moon with a home in China.

  • We value the Spirit of God at work in and through people of all ages as they use their voice to positively impact the Kingdom of God. We offer mission-centered leadership training, develop leadership abilities, and provide opportunities to lead.

  • We believe that the call to influence the world for Christ transcends gender, and we specifically value the call as it relates to women. We provide resources, discipling, and mission opportunities through which women discover their spiritual gifts and connect their gifts with their personal passions.

  • We hold fast to Christ’s command in Scripture to live a missional lifestyle. We educate children, students, and adults about missions, provide connecting points for practical mission ideas and opportunities, and offer meaningful experiences to deepen their relationship with Christ.

While our legacy began with women, our mission includes everyone. That’s why we also partner with boys and men—to equip and encourage them to live boldly on mission for God.
